During President Kufuor’s administration (2001-2009), he
decided that Valentine’s Day was becoming a day, or excuse, for promiscuous
activities in the country. Noting that
Ghana’s cocoa industry, the largest export for the country, could use a boost,
he determined that February 14 could use some rebranding. Therefore, he decided
to change the name Valentine’s Day to Chocolate Day as a means of encouraging
Ghanaians to buy chocolate (locally produced) for their loved ones. Chocolate Day has now evolved to the level of the Ghana Tourism Authority organizing events, alongside the Cocoa Processing Company, to promote the local consumption of Ghanaian chocolate. This year's theme: "Chocolate, A Healthy Expression of Love."
In our class of 47 at LECIAD, our guys decided to be romantic
on Chocolate Day and buy chocolate, drinks, and kebabs for the whole class. Just one more example of the generosity that
can be found in Ghana.
